I really can’t believe that one of my fabulous Godson’s turns 18 later this year (where has the time gone!). His U17 football team, Fernhill, reached the finals of the Cup Competition and they were all chuffed to bits to be playing the final at the Madejski Stadium. Their opposition was Reading Youth.
Before we set off, Callum was adamant that he’d be cheering on number 8. It was a bit of a relief to get there and find out that was actually Matt’s number!
Fernhill had their first goal disallowed (allegedly for offside – it wasn’t … not that we were biased!). A few minutes later Matt took a free kick. Fantastic strike, straight into the goal area and ONLY WENT STRAIGHT INTO THE BACK OF THE NET!!
1-0 Fernhill! There followed an injury time out (Fernhill’s goalie had broken his finger, but wanted it strapped up so he could carry on). Reading Youth then won a penalty in spite of Fernhill clearing the ball. Penalty scored … along with two further goals in quick succession and Fernhill were facing an uphill struggle from then on.
The guys all played their socks off and it was just a shame they couldn’t get the result they all so badly wanted. Well played everyone (but especially #8, Matt Smith!)
